Out today: Tom and Will

We are so happy to announce today the release of 'Tom and Will', our album marking 400 years since the deaths of Thomas Weelkes and William Byrd (who both died in 1623). It's called 'Tom and Will' because we have chosen to record music which explores the human characters and traits of the two men - both of whom lived colourful and extraordinary lives - rather than the more hallowed image of them which is often celebrated.

For this album, we collaborated with the viol consort Fretwork. This collaboration meant we were able to explore a wider range of repertoire: from consort songs and 'secular verse anthems' to madrigals and instrumental 'in nomines'. The result is a recording quite unlike many of our other ones, full of different textures and sounds. BBC Radio 3 'Record Review' described the collaboration as: "A beautiful pairing ... everything just weaves ... so fluid it's beautiful". In addition to recording music by these two composers, we have commissioned elegies to Byrd and Weelkes by James MacMillan and Roderick Williams respectively. These beautiful new works complete a 'chain' of laments in which composers pay homage to previous masters. You can find them album now on our recordings page.
