Adelaide, Australia

One of the greatest perils of international travel is, of course, jet-lag. As we mostly travel within Europe in the KS, and occasionally fly west to the US, this isn't usually too much of a problem. However, flying east as far as Australia (and missing out on one/two nights of sleep in the process) leads to more difficulties...

Luckily, we have had two restful days in which to recover, and we're doing pretty well here in Adelaide. Chris B and I enjoyed nine holes of golf on Wednesday, in order to stop us falling asleep. The quality of play was not brilliant, to be honest, but we succeeded in staying awake - which was the point, really. Thursday saw some media interviews and more down-time, meaning that we're raring to go and looking forward to our first performance Down Under, as part of the Adelaide Cabaret Festival.

It's odd, too, swapping summer for winter. Although we're not famed for our hot summers in the UK, we do get very long days, and it's a shame to be missing Midsummers Day at home, instead having to get used to short evenings and darkness by 6pm once again. However, the warm welcome we're receiving from our Australian hosts is more than making up for a few hours' lost sunlight.

We're starting to plan our travel and day-to-day logistics for next term, and it's a bit odd to be booking things for Ben rather than Paul. In many ways a new member starts in the group months before their first concert, and we're all encouraging Ben as he starts to learn music, gets fitted for his suit, and begins interviews and media work. All part of the circle of life, I suppose, but you never quite get used to it. Then again, by Christmas it'll be as though the new group has been together forever. Every change is a bitter-sweet process, but the positives always outweigh the negatives, and the group regenerates and moves on. The Dean of Chapel at my old college - St. John's, Cambridge - used to say that the choir achieved so much through a combination of "guts, determination, and sheer physical fitness." I rather think that applies well to the KS, too.
