A week at home in early December is something of a novelty if you're a King's Singer - indeed, I think the last time I experienced it was back in 2003! My family's made good use of it, though, decking the hall and getting ahead with Christmas presents and other festive preparations. We were at home partly because on Wednesday we joined with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Bach Choir, under the baton of our great friend John Rutter, for two Christmas concerts. The Royal Albert Hall is a real favourite venue for me, and to have the chance to perform to a full house twice in one day was really very special!Today, Pat and I went along to Royal Holloway, University of London, as part of our Ensemble-in-Residence programme that's been ongoing for a few years now. We work with small groups taken from the chapel choir, one of the finest collegiate choirs in the UK, and help them with one-to-a-part singing. It's always rewarding to work with singers of all ages and abilities, but these sessions allow us to drill down into the top techniques and principles that guide us as we perform with the KS. Whenever I take sessions like this, I go away thinking more about my own job as an ensemble singer and how I can do it better.Then it was off to the airport for a flight to Zurich, and you find me now in the lounge having spent the last hour having a fascinating conversation with a radio presenter who happened to sit down next to me. You meet an incredible range of people in this job and often it's best to leave them alone and not bother them, but occasionally the stars align and you can end up chatting to someone really interesting! There's a lot going on in the world at the moment, and being able to discuss some of that with a man who's in the middle of it every day was a real privilege.
