Lockdown Blog 51: Hair-do's and dont's

I was speaking to Liz last night and I asked her for some inspiration for my blog today. 'Famous hairdos' is the reply that came back. 'Musicians with memorable hairdos.' Given how many people have been forced to grow their locks without the prospect of hairdressers being open (unless you're living in Australia and had the benefit of getting a trim throughout lockdown), it seemed like a good idea. So here goes. One of the first articles I came across was this excellent one from BBC Music with its list of twelve iconic styles from the worlds of rock 'n' roll, rockabilly, pop, psychedelia, soul, funk, reggae, hip hop, crust punk (had to google that one), ska, rocksteady, 2 Tone (also that one), Oi! (and that one), hardcore, gothic rock, glam metal, hair metal, electro funk, RnB, gangsta rap, 70s rock, 90s country, emo and screamo (not gonna lie, found that name a little amusing). I list some of them below with examples of musicians or celebrities that certainly became synonymous with these hairdos.

  1. The Pompadour - Elvis, Johnny Cash, Morrissey, Imelda May, Alex Turner
  2. The Beehive - The Supremes, The Ronnettes, The B-52s, Amy Winehouse
  3. The Mop Top - The Beatles, Eric Burdon, Small Faces, Justin Bieber, Oasis
  4. Longhair - Almost every musician in the mid- to late-1960s, and onwards
  5. Dreadlocks - Bob Marley, Lil Wayne, The Weeknd, Zack de la Rocha
  6. The Mohican - Travis Barker, Johnny Rotten, Mr. T
  7. The Backcomb - The Cure's Robert Smith, The Horrors, Alice Cooper, Mötley Crüe
  8. Jheri curls - Lionel Richie, Michael Jackson, Ice Cube and Eazy-E of N.W.A
  9. The Mullet - Paul McCartney, Rod Stewart, Billy Ray Cyrus, Alan Jackson
  10. Curtains - Became famous amongst celebrities like Hugh Grant, Tom Cruise, Keanu Reaves, Leonardo DiCaprio, David Beckham and in music circles with Kurt Cobain.
  11. The Emo Fringe - My Chemical Romance, Paramore, All Time Low
  12. The Ponytail - Ariana Grande

So then I started thinking, what might be the Classical world of music's cult hairdos? And we should try and give them a similarly iconic nickname. So, here goes:

  1. The Woke Up Like This - this modern day classic is actually really old-hat and was perfected by Ludwig van Beethoven
  2. The Judge - J.S. Bach was clearly wearing a wig in this famous portrait...wasn't he?!
  3. The Prince Charming - Fans of Eric Whitacre, aka Jaime Lannister, will know this look well. On another note, here's a timeline of Eric's hair decisions. I'll leave you to judge for yourself!
  4. The Angry Pippy Longstocking - Frank Zappa looks like he's featuring in a horror movie with his quasi-Princess Leia look.
  5. The Stray Cat - Modest Mussorgsky was not a looker. Just as well he could compose.
  6. The Boy Wonder - Ever wondered what Mozart would look like with a pair of Ray-Bans?
  7. The Wreath - Johann Strauss II rocking this hair and beard combo is a sight to behold. Not gonna lie, slight beard envy going on here...
  8. The Albert Einstein - Edvard Grieg may as well be a look-a-like for this iconic do.
  9. The Combover - Gioacchino Rossini has got some explaining to do for his 'Barber of comb-over-ville' (not taking credit for that. That's all Geoffrey Larson)
  10. The Short Wavy Choppy Bob - A bit of a go-to look for Franz Schubert.
  11. The Slickdown - The Russian prodigy Sergei Prokofiev nailed this look. As did Cole Porter.
  12. The Low Maintenance - Arnold Schoenberg kept things simple with this reflective do.
  13. The Lighthouse Keeper - Johannes Brahms could easily have been mistaken for someone used to the solitude of life on a craggy, rocky outpost. A far cry from his younger days where he'd give Whitacre a run for his money
  14. The Wedding Look - The writer of the late 19th Century masterpiece Cavalleria rusticana, Pietro Mascagni, has this chic do down to a tee.

So there you have it, a selection of inspiring looks for you to try during lockdown. I'll keep an eye our for some of these doing the rounds on social media...Hope you're all well. Be good, be kind, be careful. See you soon!
