Well, I’ve just been watching some of the celebrations on TV about VE Day 75 years ago. Incredible archive footage, some in colour, mostly black and white. Really phenomenal and moving pictures and videos of everyone just out in the streets celebrating. Made me think, though COVID-19 is not to be compared with WWII, I wonder what will happen when lockdown ends?! Will we be dancing in the street? Will we be a little cautious perhaps? Will be want to celebrate but be a little unsure if it’s actually ok to do so?! I came across this poem the other day. Turns out it’s already been viral (an interesting term at this time…) but it really struck a chord. Maybe you’ve seen it? It’s by Kitty O’Meara.
And the people stayed HOME.
And read books, and listened, and rested,
and exercised, and made art, and played games,
and learned new ways of being, and were still.
And listened more deeply.
Some meditated, some prayed, some
danced. Some met their shadows.
And the people began to think differently.
And the people healed. And, in the absence of
people living in ignorant, dangerous, mindless,
and heartless ways, the earth began to heal.
And when the danger passed, and the people
joined together again, they grieved their losses,
and made new choices, and dreamed new
images, and created new ways to live and heal
the earth fully, as they had been HEALED.
I found this poem to be so uplifting and right on the money. It’s this almost futuristic vision of the world and what might be. It’s lovely and I think it should be read aloud to all our friends and families, reminding us of what we can achieve if we all decide to come together, like the millions of people 75 years ago who shared in a common joy and relief and togetherness.
Hang in there, we’ll meet again. I’m not entirely sure when (anyone that tells you a definitive date is probably either incredibly good at predicting the future, or they’re not being entirely truthful). But, you know what, I do know that we will meet again. Let’s hope the weather’s sunny, too.
Take care. See you soon!
