Debrecen, Hungary

Returning to Debrecen after a lengthy absence, I was reminded yesterday of a concert fairly early on in my KS tenure. We were performing in the magnificent church, overlooking the main square, and it was rammed to the rafters with audience members sitting, standing, and peering around pillars to see us. The programme was mostly early music and I'll never forget the atmosphere and marvellous acoustics of that event.Perhaps sadly, we're not performing in the same venue this time around - yet the concert last night was just as enjoyable, although for different reasons! We have two performances here and are sharing the stage with orchestra and choir, allowing us to perform Mack Wilburg's beautiful "Atlantic Bridge" set of folksongs. These were written originally for us and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, back in 2002, and are firm favourites within the repertoire. I have the joy of singing the haunting solo in "The dying soldier," truly one of my favourite melodies in the library. The usual pleasure in performing is enhanced, I find, by additional forces on-stage. You get the sense of being part of something bigger, and so even though it is our first love to perform alone as six singers, we gain a huge amount from the occasional collaborative performances we give. These are no exception - the musicians are playing and singing beautifully, and it's a pleasure to be here.
