Spike Milligan is somebody who has been a tremendous supporter of the group - he calls us ‘The last civilised singing group in the world, folks!’. We were asked to sing a song about Alice in Wonderland (Spike’s words, Alan Clare’s melody, Gordon Langford’s arrangement) on one programme in Spike’s series. In typical Spike style, each show featured a running gag and on this occasion it was - custard pies! Immediately after the end of the song we each got a pie full in the face. The pie itself was bad enough, but having to sing the poignant words ‘Alice in Wonderland, where are you now, my love?’ straight into camera, whilst being able to see Spike and five others creeping (with pies) quietly into position, was real torture.
