Prague, Czech Republic

Many of you will know that I'm currently training for the London Marathon. It's not easy within the bounds of touring life. In Johannesburg, it was too dangerous to run alone outside, particularly as I need my iPhone for guidance. In Cape Town it was too windy (or I was too tired, ahem...). In London and Oxford, storm Doris has been raging (also, did you know that Doris was my grandmother's name? I will say no more), so too wet to run. Imagine my delight here in Prague, then, where the sun is beaming down on the Vltava. This is all good news.We did a workshop yesterday evening, here in Prague, with three very talented young choirs. For me, the main point I always want to get across is that singing and performing is about more than just getting the notes right. It's about communicating what you feel and what you're singing about to your audience. That means looking at them, engaging them, and taking them on a musical and emotional journey. When singers dare to make eye contact with the people they performing for, and bring the words they're saying to life, if changes everything. In such a short time, the group Pat and I were working with transformed the way they sang. It was such a joy to watch and be a part of.Today, we're performing in the Rudolfinium. It's an extraordinary building (Google it), right in the heart of the city. It's a real privilege to sing there. Before then, we have two meetings, a rehearsal, and dinner. And I still have to fit in my run. Off I go....
