I'm writing my blog a day early this week, although it'll still be published on Friday UK time! We're sitting in Fort Myers airport waiting for our flight to take us up to Chicago for our final masterclass and concert of this tour, and while I'm looking forward to getting back to the family we've had a great experience this week in the Carolinas and Florida. The Wounded Warrior project reminded us that no matter what our personal feelings on conflicts themselves, the importance of recognising the sacrifices and dedication of those who serve their country should never be forgotten. We met a wonderful team of dedicated men and women yesterday who task themselves with doing just that - and succeed admirably! I was moved by their work and wish them all the best: our new friends in Florida!
Before this, we met up with friends old and new in North and South Carolina, performing as guests of the NCMEA Conference in Winston-Salem and then in a beautifully-restored opera house in Newberry, SC. It's always wonderful to teach and sing with talented children but in this instance it was a double pleasure as we were joined on-stage during our concert by the Enloe High School Choir, who did a great job of performing Eric Whitacre's "Seal Lullabye" - a piece Eric was considering arranging for us when I last spoke to him, but one which suited the piano/voice arrangement perfectly.
Over the past few weeks I have watched Isabella grow and change at home by using the wonders of video-conferencing on my computer, and I'm sure she recognises me even on-screen. Perhaps I'm delusional, but here's a screenshot photo of our family, separated by thousands of miles but together at least once a day if only online!
